Music is the heartbeat of worship at First Unitarian Brooklyn, with our great choir singing every week. Our nationally recognized music program is a defining feature of congregational life, bringing us together each week through artistry, participation, and shared experience. Worship services include a mix of spirited congregational singing, choral music, and performances by guest artists, with repertoire spanning centuries, cultures, and genres. On the second Sunday of each month, our beloved Second Sunday Jazz services feature some of New York City’s finest musicians, bringing fresh energy and improvisation to our worship.
Director of Music, Adam Podd, writes “I think we’re doing our best work when the music challenges and expands our understanding of what ‘sacred music’ can be, and when the lines between ‘performed’ and ‘participatory’ become so blurred that nobody knows, or cares, where one ends and the other begins. Music has a unique power to open us up emotionally, and when we move beyond thinking about the music and begin to really feel it, that’s when I know we’re really getting somewhere.”
