Queer Community @ First U
Queer Community @ First U (QC) is an affinity group of LGBTQ+ members and friends at the First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn.
For its members QC is dedicated to providing fellowship and fun, support and solidarity, an opportunity to network, and a queer space for inter-generational spiritual exploration.
For the larger congregation QC offers educational opportunities on issues that affect the queer community.
And for the world at large QC works with the congregation and other groups to fight for issues regarding justice, equality and inclusivity.
We look forward to coming together as we build strength through solidarity.
The Queer Community meets every first Sunday of the month in the Frances White room from 12:45-2:15.
If you identify as queer, please join us. Newcomers are always welcome. For more information, to join, or to share an event please email queercommunity-admin@firstubrooklyn.org
Men’s Group
The First Unitarian Congregational Society’s Men’s Group was established on November 10, 2024, with support from the Connections Committee. Newcomers are always welcome.
We meet on the second Sunday of each month from 12:45–2:15 p.m. Meetings begin with a chalice lighting and a reading of our covenant, followed by introductions and a brief check-in. We then share announcements and explore a topic chosen by the group. Before closing, we select a topic for the following month’s discussion.
To foster openness and trust, we keep personal conversations confidential. Discussions often focus on living our Unitarian Universalist values, navigating personal and social challenges, responding to current events, and supporting one another and our wider community.
In addition, we gather informally on the fourth Monday of each month from 6:30–8:30 p.m. (usually in the Library) for fellowship and conversation without a set agenda.
The Men’s Group welcomes all who identify as men or as masculine people. We strive to create a supportive, respectful, and nonjudgmental space where participants can share experiences, explore meaningful topics, and build authentic connections. We also encourage engagement with the broader life of the congregation and collaboration with other affinity groups, including women, youth, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Women’s Leadership Alliance
The Women’s Leadership Alliance (WLA) which began in Brooklyn in 1838 as the Female Samaritan Society, is as vital to the life of women in the First Unitarian Brooklyn congregation as it has ever been. These times make it necessary for women and women-identifying Unitarian Universalists to come together as a force unified and supportive of each other and others in the broader community. The WLA emphasizes the importance of women’s issues and voices, supports local and national groups who advocate for women’s rights, provides educational and mentoring activities, and supports women as ministers. We are eager to keep doing the work with your help. Contact Beth Evans beth.evans.is@gmail.com for more information.
